Ledger Fixes Critical Ethereum Bug – What Users Need to Know Now

That was close! Ledger, one of my absolute favorites among hardware wallet manufacturers, has just in time fixed a truly alarming security flaw in its Ethereum app. I mean, imagine seeing a harmless transfer to your friend on your screen – while in the background, your entire Ethereum is secretly sent to a hacker. Sounds like a bad action movie? Unfortunately, for a short time, this was a real danger.
Here’s the sequence of events: The bug in Ledger’s Ethereum app could have caused the wallet to display a transaction incorrectly. This means specifically: You might see "Send 1 ETH to Alice" – but when you confirm the transaction, in reality, a different transfer is signed. And the worst part? You would only have noticed this after the malicious transaction was already on the blockchain and your coins were gone.
First, the good news: Ledger has fixed the error with the update to version 1.22.2 of the Ethereum app (and Ledger Live). The company has even added two additional security mechanisms:
- Signature check: The wallet now verifies whether the signed transaction matches what you see.
- Physical confirmation: You now have to confirm the tra



nsaction directly on your Ledger device using the physical buttons – a second layer of security.
But let’s be honest: How dangerous was the bug really? The good news is that for a successful attack, someone would have had to act very specifically. Hardware wallets like Ledger’s are considered extremely secure because they operate offline. But as this case shows – absolute security doesn’t exist. An attacker would have had to either compromise your Ledger Live software or have physical access to your device. Both are not easy, but also not impossible.
My recommendation to you:
1. Update immediately! Go to Ledger Live and install version 1.22.2 of the Ethereum app.
2. Always double-check! Confirm transactions ONLY on the Ledger device itself – not in Ledger Live.
3. Use only official apps! Avoid unofficial versions or suspicious downloads.
I think it’s important to communicate such incidents openly – even if they’re uncomfortable. Ledger acted quickly here and responded transparently. But it also shows: Even the best solutions need constant improvement.
