Ethereum Proposal Sparks Debate: EIP-8390 Poses Risks to Network Stability📈 Ethereum (ETH) View live price
I’ll admit my first reaction upon hearing about EIP-8390 was a bewildered, “What the…?” And I’m far from alone. This proposal has kicked up as much controversy in the Ethereum community as a vacuum cleaner in a room full of cat hair. But what’s really behind it? And why is it causing so much friction?
So, what exactly is EIP-8390 proposing?
At its core, the proposal from an anonymous developer suggests slashing validator rewards in Ethereum’s Proof-of-Stake system by half—from roughly 2.5 ETH per block down to 1.25 ETH. At first glance, this seems like a smart move, especially when considering it would reduce Ethereum’s annual inflation from about 6.4 million ETH to roughly 3.2 million. Fewer new ETH in circulation equals greater scarcity—sounds like a viable plan, right?
Not so fast.
The catch isn’t just about cutting rewards—it’s also about completely overhauling how blocks achieve finality. Instead of the current on-chain logic, EIP-8390 advocates for the use of Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK-proofs), generated and verified off-chain. In theory, this boosts efficiency. In practice, it presents a nightmare for existing light clients.
Light clients in peril: Why Altair can’t just be ignored
Altair, the 2021 upgrade, was a crucial step toward improving Ethereum’s scalability. Light clients allow users to verify transactions and network state without downloading the entire blockchain—a game-changer for mobile devices and IoT applications.
EIP-8390, however, threatens these light clients. The proposed change to finality logic would require all existing Altair light clients to update. The problem? The proposal doesn’t include a clear API or incentive system for creating ZK-proofs. So who’s going to do it? And more importantly, who’s going to pay for it?

roposal riddled with question marks
Frankly, EIP-8390 feels like a blueprint for a house where key rooms are missing. The author hasn’t provided reproducible GPU benchmarks for ZK-proof generation—so how can we assess whether this is even feasible? How will validators or other participants be rewarded for their off-chain proof work? Without clear answers, implementing this proposal could lead to network fragmentation. Picture half the orchestra suddenly going silent—it wouldn’t make for a pleasant symphony.
The community isn’t on board
Reactions in the community have been overwhelmingly skeptical. While many developers and users support the idea of reducing ETH issuance, the proposed execution raises serious concerns. Major criticism centers on the proposal’s disregard for existing infrastructure and lack of planning.
Some argue that reducing ETH issuance could indeed help secure long-term value stability for the cryptocurrency. But they stress that this shouldn’t come at the cost of network stability and compatibility.
Final thoughts: A risky leap into the unknown
EIP-8390 once again highlights the complexity of Ethereum’s ongoing development. The idea of cutting inflation while boosting efficiency through ZK-proofs sounds promising at first. But without solid planning, clear incentives, and respect for existing infrastructure, the proposal risks backfiring.
The Ethereum community now faces the task of thoroughly reviewing this proposal before it potentially gets implemented—and destabilizes the network. One thing is certain: the debate around EIP-8390 isn’t going away anytime soon. I’m curious to see how it unfolds. Perhaps something good will come of it in the end. Until then, I’ll stick with tried-and-true upgrades rather than experiment with uncertain outcomes.
