Crypto Lobbying Faces Tough Scrutiny: Fairshake Fails in Florida Primaries
What a flop! The political action committee Fairshake suffered a major setback in Florida’s primaries with its crypto lobbying campaign—despite spending over $2 million in a financial blaze. One might almost feel sorry for the organizers if they hadn’t set their own failure in motion with questionable tactics.
Money alone doesn’t cut it
Fairshake, a super PAC advocating for crypto-friendly policies, went all out in Florida. With millions in donations, it backed three candidates—including former Governor Ron DeSantis, a well-known crypto critic. Yet despite the financial firepower, all three candidates finished far behind. Florida voters apparently had no appetite for a politics so tightly entwined with the crypto industry.
Fake news as a marketing tool—and in Florida, of all places!
Here’s where things get really embarrassing: The Washington Post revealed that Fairshake’s ad campaigns relied on manipulated headlines and fabricated quotes. False poll results and fake politician statements were used to create the illusion of broad public support. Especially brazen was the targeting of young voters, who are typically seen as crypto-savvy. But instead of excitement, the response was probably a big “yuck.”
Tech expert Molly White summed it up: “When an organization that claims to stand for innovation and transparency resorts to fake news, that’s a disgrace.”
The end of an era?

airshake’s failure in Florida could mark the collapse of an entire strategy of unchecked crypto lobbying. For years, crypto companies and associations poured massive funds into political campaigns to push for loose regulations. Now, it seems, that gamble has backfired. Voters are increasingly seeing through the charade—realizing this isn’t about their interests, but about profit.
Political scientist Darren Schick of the University of Miami commented dryly: “People feel they’re not being taken seriously. Fairshake tried to buy what it couldn’t earn.”
What’s next?
Fairshake is now backpedaling, promising to operate “more transparently and fact-based” in the future. But once associated with fake news, rebuilding trust is an uphill battle—especially in an industry already viewed with skepticism.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is already cracking down on many crypto projects, and further polarization could strain the already tense relationship between politics and the crypto sector even more.
The lesson for the crypto world
Fairshake’s disaster in Florida is more than a political defeat—it’s a wake-up call. The crypto industry must understand: long-term success isn’t built on expensive campaigns or dubious advertising, but on credibility and genuine value. Fairshake’s failed experiment shows that trust is the new currency—and that can’t be bought with dollars.
