Polymarket Election Betting: Who Really Stands Behind the $133 Million?
I’ll admit, I was stunned when I saw those numbers. $133 million wagered on the U.S. midterms—a figure that initially seems like a massive, open market reflecting public opinion. But here’s the catch: just 1% of wallets control that entire sum. One percent! It’s like walking into a room full of people and realizing a handful of individuals are deciding the outcome.
And who exactly are these few? They’re not ordinary citizens expressing their political preferences. They’re major hedge funds, crypto billionaires, and professional traders specializing in election betting. Markus Weber of Blockchain Research Labs puts it bluntly: “This isn’t a real market anymore—it’s a playground for insiders.” And he’s right. When a few dozen wallets determine whether a party wins with 60% or 70%, it reveals more about power dynamics in crypto than it does about actual public sentiment.
The problem grows worse when you consider how easily these insiders can manipulate the market. A strategic purchase or sale of large sums can suddenly make one side appear

the clear favorite—regardless of what the broader public thinks. Dr. Elena Hartmann, an economist, explains it this way: “Polymarket isn’t a liquid market in the traditional sense. Most bets are placed by insiders or bots, leaving little influence for regular users.”
Then there’s the ethical dilemma. Election betting is meant to be a fun way to predict political outcomes, but when the market suggests a race is already ‘decided’ because a handful of players want it that way, it undermines democratic discourse. In a country as politically divided as the U.S., this could be dangerous.
So what’s left for ordinary users like me? The hope that something changes before the next election. Stricter regulations, position limits, or better transparency for large trades might help—but so far, Polymarket doesn’t seem eager to enforce transparency.
At the end of the day, the question remains: Will the midterms truly reflect public opinion—or will they be shaped by those with the money to dominate the market? And that’s a question that concerns us all.
