This would be a logical next step for TikTok, which is already building its own financial ecosystem. Beyond virtual gifts for creators and partnerships with financial service providers, integrating P2P payments into chats would expand its portfolio even further. And this isn’t random—TikTok isn’t alone in this ambition. Other tech giants like Meta have already shown with “Facebook Pay” that users are willing to conduct financial transactions within the platform.
Why does TikTok want to become a payment service provider?
Simply put: because it’s profitable. Transaction fees, partnerships with banks, or greater control over user data—there are plenty of revenue opportunities. For young users who already spend hours scrolling on TikTok, eliminating the need to switch between apps would be a huge convenience. Who needs PayPal or Venmo if
everything is handled within TikTok?
Yet as enticing as the idea sounds, it raises plenty of concerns. Data privacy is a major issue, especially for a company already under scrutiny due to its connections to China. And then there are regulatory hurdles: in the EU, for example, financial transactions face strict rules. TikTok would need to get not just the technology right but also the legal framework—or risk running into serious trouble.
When and where will it launch?
No one knows. There are currently no official plans, and even if there were, such experiments often remain buried in code. TikTok might first test the feature in select markets, as it has done with other financial experiments before. Countries with high digital payment adoption and strong TikTok usage would be prime candidates.
Is TikTok on its way to becoming a super app?
If TikTok does integrate payments, it would further cement the trend of social media platforms evolving into all-in-one experiences. Entertainment, shopping, financial services—everything in one place. For users, it’s convenient; for competitors, it’s a cause for concern.
But one thing’s for sure: until then, it remains an exciting wait. We’ll see whether TikTok takes the big leap—or if the idea disappears back into the code. Until then: keep scrolling, keep watching.
