In practice, this means users register a single quantum-resistant public key once and use it across multiple transactions without having to generate a new, resource-intensive signature each time.

Of course, there are still hurdles. For one, reusing keys introduces risk. If a private key is compromised, an attacker could potentially steal all funds associated with it. That’s not a risk with one-time addresses, like those used in the Lightning Network. So there’s a real trade-off here: convenience versus security.
Then there’s the Bitcoin community itself—a notoriously conservative group. Many developers prefer solutions that don’t introduce new attack vectors. SHRINCS would need rigorous review and validation, no small feat. But that’s what makes this so intriguing: it’s a delicate balance between innovation and safety.
A Realistic Path into the Post-Quantum Era?
Time is running out, and quantum computers are coming. If we don’t act, Bitcoin could one day be as vulnerable as a wooden house in a hurricane. SHRINCS offers a promising middle ground: not perfect, but a realistic way to future-proof the network without punishing users.
Experts like Piotr Narewski, founder of the quantum-resistant blockchain QRL, see SHRINCS as a smart compromise. “It’s not the ultimate solution,” he says, “but it’s a step in the right direction.” And that’s exactly what we need now: steps, not leaps.
