Krypto-Wissen auf TikTok statt Uni – Studierende lernen lieber digital
I remember being a student myself—and how frustrating it was when lectures felt outdated or like endless PowerPoint loops. It’s no wonder young people today turn to TikTok, YouTube, and Reddit when they want to learn about crypto, blockchain, or DeFi. The numbers from the OKX survey don’t surprise me: over 60% of students surveyed want to know more about cryptocurrencies, yet most avoid university courses because institutions simply aren’t delivering.
The problem is even more pronounced in Germany. According to the German Blockchain Observatory, just 15% of universities even offer crypto-related courses. Meanwhile, there’s so much exciting material out there—from smart contracts to NFTs. But how are students supposed to learn when professors are still stuck in the analog financial world? And who has the patience to wait years for approvals while the crypto space evolves in real time?
Social media fills this gap—but of course, with all the risks that come with it. I’ve seen videos where influencers with no real expertise dispense financial ad

vice. And here’s the worst part: many young people don’t even realize how shallow their knowledge is. A TikTok video about Bitcoin mining might explain how to mine coins—but who understands the technical and environmental consequences behind it?
Yet there’s hope. More universities are slowly waking up to the gap. The Frankfurt School is setting an example by offering a certificate course on crypto assets since 2022. And TU Munich has even established a chair for Distributed Ledger Technology. These are important steps—but far from enough.
The problem isn’t a lack of demand. The problem is that the education system moves too slowly. While the crypto world evolves in months, universities need years to update their curricula. Social media is fast, but unreliable. What we need are practical, hands-on programs that don’t just teach theory but also foster critical thinking.
At the end of the day, this isn’t just about blockchain or cryptocurrencies. It’s about preparing young people for a digital future. And we can’t just leave that to algorithms.
