I have to admit, when I first heard about Ethena’s new self-custody app, I was immediately intrigued. Finally, a project that isn’t just another "next big thing" in the crypto world, but is actually working to make stablecoins like USDe accessible for everyday use. And it does so with annual rewards of up to 6%—a figure that instantly grabbed my attention. But can it really work, or is it just another case of hot air?
The idea behind Ethena’s app is clear: USDe isn’t meant to be just another digital asset sitting idle in some wallet—it’s designed to be used actively in daily life, for payments, savings plans, or cross-border transfers. Self-custody, meaning users retain full control over their assets, is a central promise. No need to trust centralized exchanges or depend on third-party providers. Sounds good on paper, right? But is the market really ready for this?
USDe itself isn’t your average stablecoin. While Tether (USDT) or USD Coin (USDC) are backed by fiat reserves, USDe relies on a far more complex system of derivatives and hedging strategies to maintain its stability. To many, this may sound like a convoluted financial construct—and it is. But for investors looking for alternatives to traditional stablecoins, this could be precisely the right approach.
The promised 6% annual yield is, of course, a strong incentive. Where else can you find that these days? Most banks currently offer next to no interest, and if they do, it’s under convoluted terms. With Ethena, it seems your money is essentially working for you without you having to lift a finger—at least at first glance. But where does this money actually come from? That’s where things get interesting: Ethena generates these returns through earnings from derivatives trading and other DeFi strategies. It sounds like a well-thought-out business model, but how stable and sustainable is it really?
The biggest hurdle, however, remains widespread adoption. USDe still needs to be accepted by merchants and service providers as a means of payment before it can truly become a part of everyday life. And that’s no small feat. While the crypto industry has made great strides in recent years, the reality is often that you can pay with Bitcoin or Ethereum—but only at a few, usually tech-savvy merchants. USDe woul

Another plus point: cross-border transfers. Anyone who has tried sending money abroad knows how slow and expensive it can be. Banks charge hefty fees, and sometimes it takes days for the money to arrive. With USDe and Ethena’s app, this could be done in minutes—and without high costs. That would be a genuine game-changer, especially for people in countries with limited access to banking services. But here, too, it’s a case of: until enough people and businesses get on board, it remains a theoretical advantage.
Yet where there’s light, there’s also shadow. Security in self-custody solutions hinges heavily on the technical competence of users. Anyone who loses their private keys typically has a problem—and one that’s permanent. Ethena will need to deliver truly convincing solutions to ensure the app isn’t just innovative, but also secure and user-friendly. An app that’s only usable by tech nerds won’t make the breakthrough it’s aiming for.
Then there’s the question of volatility. Even though stablecoins like USDe are designed to remain stable, there’s no absolute guarantee. In the past, we’ve seen time and time again how supposedly stable crypto assets can suddenly falter. Public skepticism toward stablecoins remains high—and not without reason.
So, the big question remains: Can Ethena really make an impact with this app? The idea is certainly exciting, and the project has potential. But whether that’s enough to revolutionize traditional payment systems is another story altogether. The rewards might attract plenty of users in the short term, but long-term success will hinge on whether USDe is truly accepted as a stable and trustworthy medium of exchange.
One thing is certain, though: The world of cryptocurrencies and DeFi is evolving at a rapid pace. Projects like Ethena show that there are always new approaches to making the financial world a little more decentralized, freer, and more accessible. Whether they ultimately succeed or not will be seen in time. But I’m curious—and maybe I’ll even give the app a try. Who knows? Soon, I might be the one paying for my lunch with USDe. A crazy thought? Perhaps. But the crypto world has always been full of crazy ideas—and some of them have truly changed the world.
