The lion’s share—surprising many—went to Bitcoin ETFs, with a staggering $816 million. Ethereum, on the other hand, had to settle for a comparatively modest $9 million. These figures come from CoinShares, and according to their Head of Research, James Butterfill, it’s no coincidence. “Institutional investors are increasingly viewing Bitcoin and Ethereum as fully fledged asset classes,” he states. And why wouldn’t they? ETFs offer a regulated, familiar way to trade through established exchanges—without the hassle of managing private wallets and the risks that come with them.
So why now? Beyond institutional curiosity, political momentum may also be playing a role. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently approved several spot Bitcoin ETFs after years of back-and-forth. “This is a game-changer,” says Butterfill. Crypto is finally shedding its reputatio
n as frivolous play money. Instead, Bitcoin is increasingly hailed as “digital gold,” and Ethereum as the “world computer”—roles that resonate strongly with institutional investors.
Macroeconomic factors are also at play. As inflation cools and interest rates potentially fall, investors are seeking alternative assets less prone to market shocks. And what better option than an asset that either crashes to zero or skyrockets?
Not everyone is celebrating, though. Some, like German CDU politician Thomas Jarzombek, warn of a potential bubble: “A sudden rush into ETFs could backfire quickly.” His advice? Proceed with caution and avoid putting all your eggs in one basket.
Still, the trend is clear: institutional players are coming back, and Bitcoin is benefiting the most—simply because it’s the most recognized and liquid asset in the crypto space. Ethereum lags behind, but that could change as more use cases and institutions adopt it.
For retail investors, this means ETFs now offer a relatively safe (and easy) way to enter the crypto market. But caution is still key—the volatility remains. Experts recommend only investing what you can afford to lose.
The bottom line? The crypto market is slowly growing up. Whether this trend persists remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the return of institutional investors brings hope—and a little more mainstream acceptance never hurts.
