Grayscale Plans Zcash ETF with High Fees and Strong DCG Influence
Grayscale is once again sparking debate—this time with a Zcash ETF application that raises eyebrows not only due to its fee structure but also its DCG entanglements. Sure, the proposal isn’t a finalized product just yet, but it raises some serious questions worth examining.
So, what exactly does it entail? According to the filing submitted on June 30, Grayscale intends to launch a Zcash Trust structured as an ETF. The proposed fee sits at 2.5%—significantly higher than most Bitcoin or Ethereum ETFs, which typically range from 0.1% to 0.9%. For long-term investors, this could quickly become a substantial drag on returns.
But that’s not the only concern. DCG International could gain up to a 34% stake in the expanded fund through a non-binding deposit of 200,000 Zcash tokens (ZEC), based on a June 30 valuation. Effectively, DCG would become one of the largest shareholders—a level of influence that critics argue could lead to conflicts of interest, especially if DCG also serves as a service provider to Grayscale.
DCG itself is no stranger to controversy, facing scrutiny over its complex financial structures. The bankruptcy of Genesis Global Capital last year only added to the pressure. Now, with this prop

osed stake in the Zcash ETF, questions about DCG’s stability and transparency resurface once more.
While Grayscale emphasizes that the application is not yet final and various scenarios are still possible, the case highlights how opaque the crypto ETF market remains. The SEC has only approved spot Bitcoin ETFs so far, leaving coins like Zcash and Ethereum in regulatory limbo. If Grayscale gets the green light, it could signal a wave of new applications—along with all the challenges that come with them.
For investors, this means higher costs compared to traditional ETFs. On the flip side, the ETF offers a simple way to gain exposure to Zcash without dealing with wallets or exchanges. However, DCG’s involvement risks further market concentration, potentially triggering regulatory hurdles down the line.
Bottom line: While Grayscale’s Zcash ETF could introduce an exciting new financial product, its high fees and potential DCG dominance make it far from unproblematic. Anyone considering an investment should keep a close eye on developments—especially regarding the final fee structure and DCG’s role. If approved, it might pave the way for more crypto ETFs, but not without inheriting all the associated risks.
