By then, however, the attackers had already gained unrestricted access to names, addresses, birthdates, and even Social Security numbers. Particularly alarming: they also stole genetic information—data that, unlike a stolen credit card, cannot simply be replaced or blocked.
How did it happen? Likely through a phishing email or a compromised access point that gave the hackers a foothold in the system. From there, they could move freely through the network and access sensitive databases. While Labcorp emphasizes that data encryption and security protocols were tightened afterward, one question lingers: was this truly an isolated incident?

Labcorp has notified affected patients and is offering free identity protection. But how many even realize their data is at risk? Genetic data is something very special—it reveals not just health details but also family history and potential genetic risks. And it’s precisely this that makes it
so valuable to criminals.

Once stolen, it remains valuable to criminals for life—whether for extortion, insurance fraud, or even targeted attacks on specific population groups."
A Wake-Up Call for the Entire Industry?
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is now investigating whether Labcorp violated the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)—a law governing patient data that carries steep penalties for breaches. But even that won’t solve the problem.
Experts are calling for stricter regulations and higher security standards. Some companies are already turning to blockchain technology to store genetic data more securely. Yet the path forward is long, and not all are willing to invest in such solutions.
