Why Crypto Fails in Everyday Life
Imagine standing at the supermarket checkout, trying to pay with Bitcoin. The cashier looks at you like you’ve just suggested settling the bill with marbles. That’s exactly how most merchants and customers feel. The reasons are painfully obvious:
- Extreme volatility: You buy a €50 shirt with Bitcoin, and by the next day, your crypto is worth only €30. No wonder few people want to receive their salary in crypto.
- Regulatory chaos: Crypto is legal here, illegal there, and the rules keep changing. Who’s supposed to keep up?
- Technical hurdles: Not everyone has a wallet, let alone the patience to deal with private keys and seed phrases. Most merchants also don’t want to invest in expensive hardware just to accept crypto payments.
Mobile Payments: The Undisputed Champion
While crypto is still in its infancy, mobile payment methods are already mature. Whether it’s contac
tless card payments, Apple Pay, or Google Pay—everything is fast, simple, and secure. The numbers speak for themselves:
- QR code payments are gaining rapid popularity, both in-store and online.
- Instant payments like SEPA Instant enable real-time transfers—no more waiting for the next banking day.
- Merchants are increasingly offering flexible payment options to meet consumer demands.
In countries like Sweden or the Netherlands, the mobile payment world is already as normal as breathing. Germany may still lag behind, but the technology is becoming more user-friendly every day.
What Does the Future Hold?
Will crypto ever break through? Honestly, I’m skeptical. Sure, it might have niche uses in cross-border transactions or specific DeFi applications. But as an everyday payment method? I’m not holding my breath.
The ECB is working on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), which could become a serious alternative. Until then, crypto remains a playground for tech enthusiasts and speculators.
The Bottom Line
The reality is simple: cryptocurrencies are (still) not ready for the mass market. Mobile payments, on the other hand, are here, practical, and make life easier. As long as volatility, regulation, and infrastructure remain unchanged, the status quo won’t shift. Maybe that’s for the best—after all, a little stability in payments never hurt anyone.
