I recently took a look at the latest figures from the UK's tax authority, HMRC, and, to be honest, I was genuinely surprised. For the 2024/2025 tax year, around 17,600 people in the UK are reporting gains from cryptocurrencies—and the total amount is mind-blowing: approximately $1.9 billion USD. The highlight? 240 of them made individual gains exceeding $1.4 million. That’s what I’d call true crypto millionaires, right?
What fascinates me most about this is that crypto is no longer a niche topic in British society. I still remember when Bitcoin was seen a few years ago as little more than a plaything for tech nerds. Today, these HMRC data show that a significant number of people have built real wealth through Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the like—and these 240 super-rich individuals are just the tip of the iceberg.
What I find particularly interesting is the distribution. Most of the 17,600 taxpayers reported smaller gains, but a huge portion of the total volume is concentrated at the top. That’s typical for asset markets, but in crypto, it’s especially pronounced. It seems those who got in before the 2021 bull run have disproportionately cashed in. And the data suggests many of them are only now realizing these gains—through sales that are, of course, taxable.
The British government has spent the last few years trying to establish clear rules for cryptocurrencies. While this brings greater legal certainty, it also introduces stricter reporting requirem

ents. For many crypto investors in the UK, tax season has become a real puzzle, often requiring professional help. Capital Gains Tax on crypto profits can go up to 24%—no small amount.
But hey, the numbers also have a positive side. They show that the crypto market in the UK isn’t just about speculation—it’s creating real value. Many of these 240 millionaires didn’t make their money through quick flips, but through long-term investments in technologies they believed in. Some are now reinvesting in startups, real estate, or other asset classes—something that could benefit the wider economy.
Of course, there will always be critics arguing that the real number is much higher because many people aren’t reporting their gains. But HMRC has improved its analysis tools and works closely with crypto exchanges to track transactions. I think the reported figures now reflect reality pretty accurately. Whether the trend continues remains to be seen—especially with new EU-level regulations and ongoing discussions about stablecoins.
For us in Germany, these UK figures are a signpost. Here too, the number of crypto investors is growing steadily, and tax authorities have tightened controls. Maybe we can learn from the British on how to foster innovation while ensuring tax fairness. Those 240 UK crypto millionaires send a clear message: who got in early and invested wisely can build real wealth in Europe using digital assets—and yes, they’ll have to pay taxes on it.
