What Went Wrong?
Coldcard has long been regarded as one of the safest hardware wallets available, thanks to features like offline key storage and a physical keypad for PIN entry. But now, it turns out its seed generation process had a major bug. And it’s a serious one.
According to Coinkite, the company behind Coldcard, all users whose wallets received an update before March 1, 2024, need to act immediately. The reason? A flaw in the random number generation (RNG) could make seed phrases predictable. And that’s about as bad as someone guessing the combination to your safe.
Why Is This a Problem?
A seed phrase is essentially the master key to your wallet. If the generation process is insecure, someone could theoretically gain access to your coins by brute-forcing the phrase – even without direct access to your device. While Coldcard uses a hardware-based RNG (HWRNG), older firmware versions apparently had a flawed implementation. The result? The randomness of the generated words left something to be desired.
The Update Boosts Security – But Not for Old Seeds
Here’s where it gets interesting: Coldcard didn’t just release an update – they’re urging users to discard existing seed phrases. That’s unusual, as most companies would just provide a patch and call it a day. But the developers are clear: no matter if you’ve installed the update, if your seed was generated before March 2024, it’s potentially unsafe.
What Can Coldcard Users Do Now?
Coinkite provides clear steps:
1. Generate a New Seed: Reset your Coldcard and create a fresh seed phrase. Store it securely – like in a safe.
2. Move Your Funds: Transfer all cryptocurrency from your old wallet to a new one with a freshly generated seed.
3. Check Your Firmware: Ensure you’re running at least version 5.2.3.
A Wake-Up Call for the Entire Industry
This incident highlights once again how crucial transparency and honest communication are in the crypto space. Hardware wallets are often marketed as “unhackable” – but even minor implementation flaws can lead to major problems.
Coldcard has set an example by taking responsibility and addressing the issue directly. Yet, it remains an important lesson for all of us: Trust is good, but verification is better. Regular checks, updates, and, if necessary, a new wallet – only then can your digital assets truly stay safe.
To all Coldcard users: Act now. The security of your coins depends on it.
