As U.S. inflation data once again fell short of expectations, Bitcoin took a significant hit. The once-impressive $60,000 mark was briefly breached, and as of this writing, the price is hovering around $59,500 – a roughly 4 % drop in 24 hours. Not only has Bitcoin wiped out last week’s gains, but it has also dashed hopes of a sustainable recovery, at least for now. A shame, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Bitcoin Gives Up Last Week’s Gains
So what’s behind this slide? The reasons are varied, but one of the main culprits is the disappointing U.S. inflation report. While the headline inflation rate has eased slightly, core inflation remains stubbornly high at 3.2 %. For many investors, this was a clear sign that the Federal Reserve may hold off on rate cuts – a move that typically hits risk assets like crypto particularly hard.
Adding to the pressure is the broader macro trend: markets are uneasy, and debates over U.S. debt levels and potential budget cuts aren’t doing anyone any favors. “Markets are searching for clear signals, and right now, they’re missing,” says my colleague Markus Weber from Blockchain Insider. “Bitcoin reacts like a seismograph – without clear guidance from the Fed, uncertainty lingers.”
Spot Bitcoin ETFs Log First Two-Day Outflows
And then there are the ETFs. The spot Bitcoin ETFs, which have reliably seen inflows in recent weeks, experienced their first back-to-back days of outflows since late July. In total, roughly $200 million exited these funds – a clear sign that even institutional investors are exercising caution.
The hardest hit: BlackRoc
k’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which saw outflows of about $150 million. Even the Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) and the Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) took some hits, though not as sharply. Only the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) managed to post minor inflows – a tiny glimmer of hope amid the turbulence.
“The ETFs have been a key support for Bitcoin prices in recent months,” Weber notes. “But if these outflows persist, the downward pressure on prices could intensify.” This comes just after Trump’s announcement of a potential “Bitcoin reserve” for the U.S., which had previously driven record ETF inflows. The excitement seems to have faded, at least for now.
Altcoins Drifting Without Clear Direction
What about the altcoins? Ethereum, Solana, and XRP failed to generate positive momentum today, either. Ethereum is stuck around $3,000, Solana dropped about 3 %, and XRP remained stable at roughly $0.50. The general risk-off sentiment is pushing investors toward established coins while sidelining altcoins.
Outlook: What’s Next?
The coming weeks promise to be eventful. The next inflation data and potential signals from the Federal Reserve will be critical. If the U.S. central bank finally cuts rates in September, it could lift sentiment across the crypto space.
Until then, volatility remains high, and investors should brace for further fluctuations. “Markets are in a consolidation phase right now,” Weber explains. “Long-term investors shouldn’t overreact to these moves. Short term, though, there’s no guarantee against further pullbacks.”
For Bitcoin and the crypto community, the message is clear: patience is key, and volatility must be weathered. Maybe this is just a temporary dip – or the start of something bigger. Who really knows? One thing’s for sure: the next few days will be anything but dull.
