Lesson 2
What is Ethereum?
Smart contracts, DeFi and the Ethereum blockchain
Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin – but much more than just a currency. Ethereum is a platform where developers can build decentralized applications (dApps).
The heart of Ethereum is smart contracts: self-executing programs that settle agreements automatically, without a trusted intermediary.
Most of the DeFi world (Decentralized Finance) runs on Ethereum: loans, exchanges and yield products without banks. NFTs are also mostly traded on Ethereum.
Ethereum\\\'s native token is called Ether (ETH). It is used for transaction fees and as "gas" for smart contracts.
