Lesson 4

What is DeFi?

Decentralized finance – banking without banks

DeFi stands for Decentralized Finance. DeFi replaces traditional financial services with smart contracts on the blockchain.

Loans, savings, exchange, insurance: everything a bank offers can happen in DeFi without a bank – 24/7, worldwide, for anyone with internet access.

The most well-known DeFi applications are decentralized exchanges (DEX) like Uniswap, lending protocols like Aave and stablecoin platforms.

DeFi offers opportunities but also risks: smart contract bugs and high volatility have led to losses in the past. Always do your own research.
